Celebrating the Journey: Why Small Wins Matter
When I was in business school, I read Leading Change by John P. Kotter, where he outlines an 8-step process for successfully implementing organizational change. One of the key points he highlights is the importance of generating and celebrating small wins to build momentum — something I’ve come to appreciate in both business and life.
Whether big or small, taking time to acknowledge and celebrate progress — whether through giving kudos, sending a note, or simply pausing for a moment of gratitude — has powerful benefits.
→ It fuels motivation, boosts morale, and keeps us focused on the progress we’re making, even when the bigger picture feels totally overwhelming.
→ It’s about shifting our attention from what’s left to do to what’s already been accomplished, which helps us feel a sense of achievement and encourages us to keep going.
Just the other day, I was catching up with a dear friend on a venture we’re working on. At the end of our conversation, we realized we’d reached a small but really cool milestone — and it was time to celebrate!
…So, we did with memes and virtual cheers.
As you move through your day and put in the work, how will you celebrate your wins — no matter how small? Acknowledging these moments can help you stay energized, focused, and resilient on your path to even bigger achievements.
