Global Work-Life Wisdom: S.Korea

Much like my reflections after Japan, South Korea left me inspired to rethink work, rest, and connection.

One concept that really stands out is 'jeong': deep, lasting connections between people built through shared experiences. Studies show strong social ties reduce stress. Then there’s the 'jjimjilbang' / bathhouse culture, which involves hot/cold baths, socializing, and communal rest. And yes, the famous 'ppalli-ppalli' (which I believe translates to hurry hurry) mindset keeps things moving fast, but people are also embracing healing culture in intentional hobbies and ways to reset + recharge.

So, what's the takeaway for work-life alignment? Something we all know, but don't always practice:
→ Being productive is great, but without downtime and connection, burnout is inevitable. Pairing focus with social time, self-care, and even a little fermented food can boost energy, mood, and creativity.

3 simple ways to try these practices:
1️⃣ Hobby Break: Do something restorative after work — play a racquet sport (I'm biased!), cook, walk, take photos, or enjoy a quiet coffee shop moment.
2️⃣ Connection Check-In: Text or call a friend or colleague just to connect — no work talk, if possible.
3️⃣ Mini Spa Reset: Try alternating a hot shower with a cool rinse at night — a jjimjilbang-inspired way to de-stress.

You don’t need a plane ticket to bring global wellness into your life...just curiosity, intention, and small habits that actually stick.
